Climbing for Heroes: My Experience at the FDNY Foundation Climb to SUMMIT

I had the privilege of participating in the Second Annual FDNY Foundation Climb to SUMMIT at One Vanderbilt. As someone who runs regularly, I thought I was prepared for the challenge, but nothing could have fully prepared me for what it truly meant to climb 1,500 steps—92 stories—inside one of New York City's tallest buildings.

Photographing the Event

In addition to taking part in the climb, I also had the honor of photographing the event before and after the race. Capturing the energy of such an inspiring event added a whole new layer to the experience. Before the climb began, I was able to photograph the excited buzz in the lobby, where participants were gathering, stretching, and gearing up for the challenge ahead.

After my own climb, I was able to capture the joy of reaching the summit and the quiet moments of reflection. It was amazing to witness the emotional release as participants crossed the finish line, smiling and high-fiving one another.

The Challenge

The climb itself is intense. Participants race up the 1,500 steps inside One Vanderbilt, pushing themselves to reach the summit on the 92nd floor of the skyscraper. The experience mirrored the resilience and determination of New York’s Bravest, whose courage and strength inspired this event. I couldn’t help but think about the real firefighters who face far greater challenges every day. This climb was a small but significant way to honor their sacrifice.

The Support and Solidarity

What struck me most wasn’t just the physical difficulty—it was the sense of community. All around me, firefighters, first responders, and civilians were pushing through the same challenge, each with their own reasons for participating. The solidarity in that building was palpable. It wasn’t a competition; it was a collective effort to support the FDNY, to honor the fallen, and to raise awareness for important causes.

Raising Funds for a Worthy Cause

The FDNY Climb to SUMMIT is also a fundraiser for the FDNY Foundation, which supports programs that are critical to the health and well-being of firefighters. Knowing that the funds from this event help support the brave men and women who continue to serve made every step worth it.

If you’re looking for a way to challenge yourself and support an important cause, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
