Reverse Manhattanhenge: NYC's Winter Sunrise Phenomenon

If you’ve experienced Manhattanhenge in the summer, you’ve witnessed the stunning sight of the sun aligning perfectly with the city’s east-west streets. But did you know there’s a reverse Manhattanhenge that happens every winter, when the sun rises and aligns with the grid in the opposite direction? This lesser-known event is a rare opportunity to experience New York City in a completely different light.

In contrast to the famous Manhattanhenge sunsets in May and July, the reverse Manhattanhenge takes place in winter during the sunrise, and it aligns with the city’s grid of streets. Here's everything you need to know about this hidden gem of a winter event.

What is Reverse Manhattanhenge?

The reverse Manhattanhenge occurs during the winter months, when the sunrise aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s street grid.

The phenomenon happens around the winter solstice, which marks the shortest day of the year, and is characterized by the sun rising directly between the skyscrapers, casting soft, golden light down the city’s streets. It's a spectacular sight, and though it’s less well-known than its summer counterpart, it's no less magical.

When Does Reverse Manhattanhenge Happen?

The reverse Manhattanhenge occurs around the winter solstice, this winter the sunrise will bring the Reverse Manhattanhenge on  November 29th & November 30th at around 6:59 a.m. There will also be two more chances to view Reverse Manhattanhenge on January 11th & January 12th. However, the reverse event can be seen for several days in-between these dates, as the sun gradually moves along its winter path.

Best Streets to View Reverse Manhattanhenge

To catch the reverse Manhattanhenge, you’ll need to head to one of the wide east-west streets in Manhattan, just like you would for the summer version. The key difference is that for the winter reverse event, you’ll be looking towards the east for the sunrise, as the sun will be rising directly between the buildings along these streets.

The best streets to view the reverse Manhattanhenge are:

  • 14th Street

  • 23rd Street

  • 34th Street

  • 42nd Street

  • 57th Street

These streets give you the clearest views of the sun rising directly between the towering skyscrapers. Since the sun rises lower in the sky during the winter months, it creates the perfect opportunity for dramatic photos of the sun framed by the buildings.

Why is Reverse Manhattanhenge So Special?

While Manhattanhenge at sunset is famous for its dramatic views of the sun setting between the skyscrapers, the reverse Manhattanhenge at sunrise offers a more peaceful, quiet version of the same stunning effect. The winter sun rises lower in the sky, creating a softer, more golden light that gently illuminates the city.

Experiencing this event in the early morning hours, before the hustle and bustle of the city takes over, allows you to enjoy New York’s beauty in a calm, reflective atmosphere. It’s a perfect moment for anyone who loves photography, cityscapes, or simply wants to see the city in a different light. Whether you're a professional photographer or someone simply looking for a unique winter experience, the reverse Manhattanhenge is a must-see event.
